The teaching of reading in the Cuban education from 1790 to 1835

The objective of this article was to reveal the main characteristics of the conceptions of the Cuban educators José Agustín Caballero and José de la Luz y Caballero on the teaching of reading. The analysis began with a description of the teaching reading method proposed by Father Caballero in the late eighteenth century, to apply it in the elementary free schools, which he called "Patriotic Schools". The authors continued the study with a discussion of the changes introduced by José de la Luz y Caballero in the existing conception about teaching reading at that time. Then, their theoretical contributions were assessed to Cuban education in this field during the thirties of the nineteenth century. The scientific results presented by these writers were possible thanks to the consulting of different sources, among them can be mentioned the text: "Teaching Reading", written by the main author of this work, which is part of the "Philosophical-Pedagogical Dictionary José de la Luz y Caballero" in the editorial process . Several articles and other documents written by José Agustín Caballero and José de la Luz y Caballero on the teaching of reading were also consulted.
