Psychological Characterization of the Preschool Child with Signs of Delayed Mental Development

The early and appropriate detection of children with special educational needs in early childhood is a priority for the Cuban System of Education. This will allow fulfilling the Primary Education objective: the achievement of the maximum comprehensive development from each child. Hence, the identification of such psychopedagogical characteristics in mentally handicapped preschool children favors their educational treatment. The study aimed at the characterization of this preschool child from the psychopedagogical level. It constitutes the result of a doctoral thesis. The main methods used in the research were the case study, observation and the survey.
