Luz y Caballero: about the qualities that should characterize a good teacher

The main objective of this article revealed the specificities of the conceptions of Luz about the qualities that must characterize the kind of teacher that the national formation process demanded in the first half of the XIX Cuban century. The authors applied the analysis of historical documents. For that purpose, a search on the written work of José de la Luz y Caballero was developed, selected the texts and analyzed the assumptions of the notable educator, on how must be a good teacher. Likewise, others published about Luz y Caballero by Cuban specialists were also revised; their points of view were compared and valued their conceptions. The idea of a perfect teacher proposed by Luz y Caballero for the Cuban school of his epoch was analyzed. It was considered that his conceptions, about how must be a good teacher, were novel in his time, due to they expressed the need of founding a new Cuban school, sponsored by committed teachers with the task of create an autochthonous culture, from which the Cuban identity flourished.
