Early blight (Alternaria solani Sor.) behavior in tomato in Holguin

Abstract

In the period 2005-2012, a study was conducted in order to analyze the early blight (Alternaria solani Sor.) behavior of tomato in Holguin, Cuba, to improve the integrated management system, since the disease is present throughout the year in this region. It was analyzed the level of attack of the affected areas, the appearance of the first symptoms, frequency, and apparent infection rate in the months of cultivation. Among the materials and methods used are the biological variables data from the Territorial Station of Plant Protection of Holguin, the frequency distribution analysis of the disease onset as well as the behavioral assessment of buds in different months of the year, revealing as results, that the disease is present from the beginning of the transplantation in September, which helped to improve the detection of the warning signals and for plotting seeding strategies within the integrated management programs. These elements supported the development of teaching tasks in the professional pedagogical process in the subject Agricultural Health IV from such specialty from the University of Pedagogical Sciences in Holguin.
