Development of post-surgical patient safety competency in nursing students

Abstract

The main purpose of postoperative care is to identify and early treat possible complications derived from surgery and/or anesthesia, which are part of the actions for patient safety that nursing staff must apply. In this sense, the objective of this article is to propose a training procedure to develop post-surgical patient safety competence in nursing students during on-the-job education. To achieve this purpose, a mixed investigation was developed through a pre-experimental design of a descriptive-transversal nature, using the Chi square X2 statistician in the hypothesis test, to assess the relevance of the proposed procedure; using methods such as: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, observation and the system approach to prepare the proposal. Correspondingly, a theoretical referential framework is presented that allowed the training procedure to be implemented during on-the-job education, while the assessment of its relevance allowed us to verify its validity to develop post-surgical patient safety competence in nursing students.
