Luz y Caballero: por una economía floreciente y autónoma en Cuba

Abstract

Through this article the contents and signification of José de la Luz y Caballero's plan to push the economic and social growth of Cuba is analysed. The authors begin by an assessment of the great teacher's conception of the urgency of an education that would fulfil the needs of the country. They also analyse the interest of Luz y Caballero to promote commerce, which would be labelled as “The engine of progress in modern society”. In another moment they approach the relative topic to Luz's intention of to revalue the peseta sevillana and to erect banks, guarantors of investments for the agricultural and industrial development, as well as their proposal of adopting measures to protect the nascent Cuban industry.
