Abstract

Olivopontocerebellar atrophy is the anatomopathological marker of spinocerebellar ataxia type 2. To describe its clinical behavior, in 34 subjects diagnosed with SCA2, belonging to the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias, Cuba, between February and July 2023, A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. 76.5% obtained a value of the anteroposterior diameter of the midbrain less than 17.99 mm. There are significant differences between the patient group and the preclinical group. The Spearman coefficient is -0.512, demonstrating a moderate to strong relationship, that is, when one increases the other decreases. This relationship was statistically significant. It concludes with the proposal of actions for the prevention of this health problem in patients from which DAPMES reflects the neurodegenerative process in SCA2, marking differences between the different clinical stages of the disease and could be used as a biomarker in clinical trials.
