Abstract

The academic success in higher education is one of the major quality indicators in the superior education system. The influential factors in that indicator and their weight vary from an university to another. The aim of this paper is to present a study of the most common factors impacting in the student academic performance in the first year of computer science course of the University Agostinho Neto. Particularly, the result of the academic performance study on the subject Logical of the Programming (LP) is showed. Subject LP is one of the most important inside the course. A group of factors was selected considering those especially significant over the results of the subject LP. A correlacional analysis between the group of selected factors and the variable criterion was carried out by means of contingency tables, using chi-square test. A statistically significant association among a group of nine factors and to pass the matter LP is obtained. The followed procedure is applicable to other performance indicators. It’s also concluded that academic performance is a multifactor problem demanding a particular analysis in each context.
