La escultura conmemorativa en Holguín durante el período neocolonial

Abstract

The beginning of the sculpture in Holguin in this period is known since April 10, 1916, exactly the date when they unveiled the statues placed in the main parks of the city, due to the fact that they wanted to dignify the heroes of the Independence Wars, building great monuments all through the country. These master pieces were designed, developed and sent to Cuba by Ugo Luisi’s House and Co. from Italy, so that they are marked with a foreign character. Two important personalities of the country also influenced very much in the local sculpture, the former was the artist Mario Santí who has among his best works “Mausoleo a José Martí” in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in Santiago de Cuba. He also made several busts, portraits and the monument to the mothers of Calixto García Park. The latter, a great artist was Rafael Melanio Aguilera, a well-known creator who devoted his life to get a wide culture and knowledge to master the techniques of the human body, in spite of being a self-taught person.
